I like to use 600 wet and then 1200 ultra paper to clean up the crank, but fine crocus cloth should work. I don't think you'll get emory cloth that fine, could be your problem.

WebFeb 7, 2016 · Maybe use sandpaper ( proper grit ) on the bottom of the engine block, and I always use Magic ( or other ) paint reducer for all gasket cleaning/ prep work. I know, its said one can install gaskets dry. Its my preference to use the Indian Head stuff., but I usually cut all my own gaskets.
